Who is Angela Davis? She is the subject of this week’s sample, “Free Angela” by Bayete. A 1970 warrant charged her as an accomplice to conspiracy, kidnapping, and homicide. She was a Communist. She was the third woman to appear on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List. She fled California and eluded capture for 2 months before being arrested in New York. While in prison, she inspired songs like “Angela” by John Lennon and “Sweet Black Angel” by The Rolling Stones. She was a vibrant activist during the Civil Rights Movement and was associated with the Black Panthers. She’s a philospher, an author, a feminist, and retired professor. Today, Angela is still active as she currently is involved in pushing for prison reform. Here’s a video interview of Angela Davis circa 1984.
