BeatSession 11|22|10

The sample this week comes from a band that was once described as “one of the few American links between psychedelia and what soon became Heavy Metal.” Originating from Long Island, New York, Vanilla Fudge recorded five albums during the span of 1966-1969. Its group members were big admirers of the Beatles which is evident in their choice of cover songs such as “Ticket to Ride” and, this week’s sample, “Eleanor Rigby”. In a previous BeatSession, we actually sampled one of their more popular songs, a cover of The Supremes’ “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” [Check out BeatSession02|28|10 — that was definitely one of my favorite weeks!] After listening to much of Vanilla Fudge’s catalog, I must say, i’m a HUGE fan of their drummer, Carmine Appice. Classically trained with a huge jazz influence, Carmine was known for his showmanship and is said to be the influence and inspiration for a slew of legendary drummers.

Random fact about the Beatles’ classic: Eleanor Rigby was not the original character name that Paul McCartney came up with when creating the song. Originally, the name Daisy Hawkins was chosen. And Father Mckenzie came by way of him picking a random name from the phone book.
