Original Sample:

Love is a Battlefield by Pat Benetar

This week’s sample is not another obscure sappy soul song. This means one thing — I didn’t pick it. And that’s a good thing. It’s a good change of pace AND it was a good challenge for those that participated this week. It also means I didn’t spend my entire Tuesday night going through samples (BIG shoutout to Sandra (@smallestchan) for the sample suggestion!). There were multiple requests for us to chop up an 80s sample.

This week we they sampled Multi-Platinum / four-time Grammy award winning singer, Pat Benetar. This particular song, Love is a Battlefield, was released on her 1983 album, Live From Earth, and it won her a Grammy for best female vocal performance. The video, which was nominated for MTV’s best female video, shows Benetar as a teenage runaway who becomes a prostitute on the streets of NYC. It’s definitely a blast from the past and showcases some of those fashion trends that some of us hope will never come back — no matter how much they try to bring the 80s back… But if they do, “..that’s okay with me, that’s where they made me at” (a la Jay Z) – peace, illa (@illa0804)

  1. LazaMusic says:

what’s up, just checked out the second one, it’s pretty tight only it’s not cool he uses the MJ sample with it. It’s cool to use the vocals but when you are using two different samples all the way, that’s not really fair right?

    • its fair. i thought it was ill! i’ve used two samples on a submission before. as long as the sample of the week is used in some way, shape or form. in fact, i think it was pretty genius to use that specific MJ sample which is about “youth rebelling against hate/prejudice”. After watching the love is a battlefield music video, i could see “they don’t care about us” as being what is written from the girl to her little brother about their parents…. or to the pimp i guess lol. she rebelled from her parents then led a rebellion against the pimp… kind of a “you gotta be independent” mentality because “they don’t really care”… haha ok maybe i’m thinking too much. but nonetheless, i thought it was ill just to make the two samples go together, musically.

Why its even more genius, is this — That dance sequence near the end of the video reminded me of thriller. turns out, this music video was released just months after MJ released the epic thriller video, which makes so much sense now. definitely some MJ influence there. plus the album cover (of the single) even looks zombie-like.

anyways, that;s my 2 cents. dope session everyone. ok, late for work. PEACE!

  3. DJ Spinz says:

Damn had such a hard time sampling this song haha

  4. Confidence says:

yeah, let’s stick to more of the classics next time. people had some good posts but overall this wasn’t my cup of tea.

  5. Big shout out to Sandra for choosing the sample

@ DJ Spinz: I agree in some ways (nice tune by the way, love what you did) – the song is certainly a challenge in that you are constantly searching for the right fix.
The thing (which I love) is that there are so many frequencies that it really tests you to search and search and search.

Well done peeps. Bring on the next one!

  6. C. Bran says:

Yeah. This was not one that just jumped out and said “chop me here”. This was really challenging. As Black Phoenix said….”Well done peeps. Bring on the next one!”

  7. LateNite says:

Challenging it is! Though it was a dope session! And like the guys above me, bring on that new ish!

  8. Gee. says:

25/8! Your beat this week was nuts! Kinda sounds like a theme for the Decepticons if they beat the Autobots at the end of the classic cartoon movie haha.

  9. 25/8 says:

@Gee: thanx homie! i tried to go for that rough “bad guys in beast mode” sound! lol!
