Original Sample:

The Bombing by Hannibal Marvin Peterson

While the world is busy dropping bombs and enforcing no fly zones, members of the WBS family (which currently spans 4 continents) take a moment each week to come together. Some take a break from school — others take a break from their 9-5. Some people chop up the sample at home, or at their studio, while others chop up the sample at a random coffee shop (in miami). How some of you found the weekly beat sessions, I’m not quite sure. Some found it on twitter. Others via facebook. Maybe it was a random google search or stumbleupon. Or maybe some of you were sent here by word of mouth (through Chrizo). Whatever your reason to participate or listen each week is, we’re glad that you do.

This week’s sample comes from Hannibal Marvin Peterson, an amazing jazz trumpeter and composer who released 13 albums from 1973-2009. Despite his music being played by major orchestras and his side-role with more popular jazz artists, he remains, for the most part, unknown to even jazz enthusiasts. We took the sample from his first album, “Children of The Fire” which was composed in its entirety by Peterson and even features poetry by him as well. The entire album, both music and poetry, is dedicated to the children of Vietnam during the latter part of the Vietnam war. The liner notes of the album states that, “…[the album] is a constant reminder and protest to the slaying of humans, whether in the name of God, King, or country”.

On another note, some of you might have seen this tweet and thought that this week’s sample was going to be Rebecca Black’s Friday. It was meant to be an April Fool’s joke. Soco and I visited gainesville, fl this past weekend. We met up with eladbrit for lunch and i told him about the April Fool’s joke. A couple hours after lunch, I get an email from him with an attachment titled Jay-Z + Rebecca Black lol. Although I wish he chopped up the sample of the week, i’m glad that he flipped the Rebecca Black song because its DOOOPE! Check it out at the bottom of this post. peace, @illa0804
