Original Sample:
A Ballad For Joe Louis by The Crusaders
This week’s sample was inadvertently and unknowingly picked (for a 2nd time) by PMBeatz’s brother Jeff Villena, an avid listener of WBS since back in the day. His facebook post of this found its way onto my mini-feed. I did some research and was pleased to find it was a joint off The Crusaders’ 1974 album, Southern Comfort.
Real laid back, jazzy, with a mix of funk — probably not the first things that come to mind when you think of Joe Louis, the boxing great that this song is dedicated to. Nonetheless, it’s an amazing song littered with beautiful Rhodes piano solos by Joe Sample and right when you think the song’s going to end, they bring it back w/ some ill horns at 3:49. Since 1961, this group has released 40+ albums which make up one amazing catalog of jazz/funk. They actually reunited back in 2003 with an album called Rural Renewal and they even went on tour last year.
Dope session this week.
[Ok… back to the playoffs. go heat! 🙂 ]
