Original Sample:

Holding You, Loving You by Don Blackman

This week’s sample comes from the 1982 self-titled release by Don Blackman (Composer/Pianist/Vocalist). This Jazz-Funk classic has been sampled numerous times and with good reason. The back beat on Holding You, Loving You has such a chill groove which carries well due in large part to the bass guitar of the legendary Barry “Sunjohn” Johnson. Prior to this album release, Don Blackman played for artists such as Parliament Funkadelic, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Roy Ayers. His next album release did not occur until 20 years later. During that hiatus, Don remained very active musically as a jingle writer. His music has been used in numerous commercials such as Coca Cola, Burger King, Coors Light, Gatorade, Western Union, and Lego. His music is also featured on New York Undercover and Nickelodeon’s Gullah Gullah Island. While I wish Don Blackman recorded more albums as a recording artist, you can’t knock him for pursuing his passion as a jingle writer. He’s an amazing multi-talented artist that it still grooving with the best of them today. Here’s a video of him from last year in London, performing this week’s sample.

Also, I’ve got to say RIP for Amy Winehouse. She was an amazing artist that left us way too soon.

peace, @illa0804/@generationill
