This week’s sample comes from Otis Redding, one of the most influential soul artists of the 1960s. Despite his short recording career, he’s considered to be one of the greatest artist/singers of all time. He died in a plane crash at just 26 years old. Try a Little Tenderness has been included on a numerous “best songs of all time” lists. In the second verse, the drummer Al Jackson Jr. switched it up to double-time. Supposedly, no one else (not even Otis) knew that the drummer was going to switch it up when they recorded. I’m glad he did as its a great build-up to the climatic ending.

As you know, this song was sampled on on Jay-Z and Kanye’s recent release, Watch The Throne. I’m currently in NYC so I have to keep this write up short but be sure to check out generationill.com later this week for an album review. I just bought the album and plan to give it a listen on my flight back to Miami.
