(I’d Know You) Anywhere by Ashford & Simpson
Nick Ashford was one-half of Ashford & Simpson, the songwriting/production powerhouse of Motown. The husband-wife duo was all about both quantity AND quality. Quantity — Go to Nick Ashford’s profile on the Songwriters Hall of Fame site and you’ll see 17 pages of songs that he’s given credit for. Quality — now read the song titles that grace those 17 pages. I’ll save you the time: “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”, “You’re All I Need To Get By”, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing”, “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me”, “California Soul”. You’ll notice hits by Ray Charles, The 5th Dimension, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Smokey Robinson & The Miracles, The Marvelettes, The Supremes, Teddy Pendergrass, The Brothers Johnson, Chaka Khan…. and the most amazing part is that it’s just a fraction of the artists and songs that they’re associated with. As if that wasn’t enough, Ashford & Simpson went on to have successful careers as recording artists.
Every once in awhile WBS features videos. I’m not sure if anyone watches them (or if anyone even reads the write-up). But I highly recommend watching this one. I randomly found this video which is actually an excerpt from a documentary about Marvin Gaye. In this clip (1:22 – 7:39), Nick Ashford and Valerie Simpson go down memory lane and revisit some the songs they wrote for Marvin Gaye. You can really see the chemistry between the the two of them, which is why they were such great songwriters.
This past Monday, Nick Ashford passed away. He is survived by his wife, Valerie Simpson and two daughters. He is also survived by 350+ songs; he is immortalized.

It was an HBO night, lol. Was going to call it Fold Up Skis, skis that unscrew like a pool stick… but that idea lost millions when it came out.
Everybody killed it this week! I know this cat Dingo wasn’t cutting it up @ 1:02 of his track! That was ill. BP…..I don’t know what they’re putting in the water over there in London but yeah that was dope bro! NeV-Mean chops! Sideways-Nice flip midway through. Bruce-drums were stupid and I like how you let the actual song breath. 25/8-Wale would be proud. Dope.
I’m just amazed at how everyone approachs these samples each week. Thanks for helping make me a better producer!
