BeatSession 10|11|11

Original Sample:

Dream by The Brothers of Soul

“During the riots many shops and stores were daubed with the words ‘Soul Brother’ in the hope that looters and arsonists would leave them alone. I played on the words and came up with The Brothers of Soul.” – Fred Bridges

In July of 1967, while the city of Detroit was burning, three men (Bridges, Knight and Eaton) were on a mission to finish a song — a song that they felt was a hit. For five days, Detroit was under siege by rioters, the national guard, the army, and the Detroit police. Violating the city-wide curfew and risking arrest, the three men would make their way to La Beat Recording Company for a series of recording sessions. The song that they recorded is this week’s sample and it was part of a series of 45’s that were released during the latter part of 1967.

The 1967 Detroit Riot resulted in forty-three dead, 467 injured, over 7,200 arrests, and more than 2,000 buildings destroyed. But amid this chaos, an amazing song was recorded.

During my last few visits to the barbershop, my barber – Flock, an avid listener of WBS — has been trying to get me onto the Mississippi Emcee/Producer Big K.R.I.T. The last two samples for the BeatSessions have been samples used by Big K.R.I.T. I admit, he’s been growing on me, both as a producer and an emcee. After the jump, check out his song, Dreamin, which also uses this sample.
