The Original Sample:
You Don’t Have to Worry by Doris & Kelley
Ok, it’s Monday night! Time to do some research on this week’s sampled artist:
Google Search #1: Doris & Kelley
Result: The first link is the wikipedia page for Doris Kelley, former Iowa State Representative.
Google Search #2: “Doris & Kelley”
Result: the first link is to to Derek’s Daily 45 (which is a really dope blog, btw), but the only info he had was that it was released in 1967.
Google Search #3: “Doris & Kelley” “You Don’t Have to Worry”
Result: youtube videos of the song and a bunch of blogs talking about how No I.D. sampled it for Common’s Sweet.
Google Search #4: “Doris & Kelley” “You Don’t Have to Worry” -youtube -Common
Result: more bloggers blogging about how they can’t find any info other than the fact that it was released on Brunswick Records. Oh… and an ebay page selling the 45 for $100.
Google Search #5: “Brunswick Records”
Result: home page of Brunswick Records, but no mention of Doris & Kelley anywhere.
So this is what we know about the psychedelic soul group, Doris & Kelley. Let’s start with — they’re rare and obscure. This appears to be their only release back in 1967 on Brunswick Records, although Brunswick Records has no mention of them on their homepage. It was sampled by No I.D. on Common’s Sweet and the 45 is currently selling for $100 on Ebay. I could do more searching, but I literally have NO TIME.
DOPE submissions this week! On to the next…
