The Original Sample:
Dođi Kad Zima Odlazi by Bisera Veletanlić
As you know, The Weekly Beat Sessions were originally in-person sessions. So when I found out that Gee (Toronto) and PMBeatz (DC) were both going to be in South Florida for Christmas break, I figured it was a good opportunity to return to the original tradition of the in-person BeatSession. In case you missed it, here’s a quick recap of our In-Person BeatSession which was held at my place on 12/29/11.
I got out of work at 5pm and headed straight to CVS to pick up some drinks and extra power strips. First to arrive at around 7pm was Kritikul and 25/8. Although they’re both from Miami, it was only my second time meeting Kritikul and my first time meeting 25/8. Once PMBeatz and his brother, Jeff, arrived, we headed to The Burger & Beer Joint on South Beach for the WBS Meet & Greet and dinner courtesy of Generation ILL.
Gee and his friend, Faris, met us at the spot. I know the other guys will agree, it was kind of surreal to finally put some faces to the WBS producer names we see each week. Yeah, so SOMEBODY forgot to make reservations, so we had a pretty long wait. But it was cool — more time to meet and greet, right? We got the obvious questions out of the way quick (e.g. What equipment do you use? How’d you hear about WBS? etc.) And after that, people started picking PM’s brain regarding his mixdowns. It was good times: good food and good company.
Since we started dinner late, we didn’t get back to my place for the in-person beatsession until after 10pm. Other than a few technical difficulties, it was like old times. We first all listened to the original sample (which is this week’s sample). Then we spent 2 hours or so chopping up the sample. Everyone claimed what space they could to set up their equipment and 2 hours later, (almost) everyone showcased their submission.
The in-person beatsession was a success. Some of the faces were new, but I feel we’ve all gotten to know each other through the music each week. And you’d be surprised how much you can tell about a person’s personality from their production style alone. I think we’re going to make this an annual tradition and rotate the city that hosts it. 2011 was Miami, 2012 will be [insert your city].
Also, here’s some brief info regarding this week’s sample. The sample is courtesy of Bisera Veletanlić, a Yugoslavian jazz singer, who released the song in 1975. According to google translate, the song’s title means “Come When Winter Goes”.
