BeatSession 01|17|12

The Original Sample:

I’ll Take Good Care of You by Bobby Wilson

We’ve been on a soulful tip these past few sessions. I apologize — but I promise that next week we will switch it up entirely. This week we sample a very overlooked song on a pretty obscure album. We’ve sampled Bobby Wilson before (BeatSession 04|25|11), but let me reintroduce you to him. He recorded just one album on Buddah Records back in 1975. And while we’ve sampled this album before, I completely overlooked this track. I must’ve accidently skipped this track when diggin’ thru samples, cuz this song was begging to be chopped up. It’s an amazingly soulful track with an awesome arrangement, instrumentation (strings/organ/piano/percussion), and amazing background vocals. Be sure to check out this week’s submissions. There’s a lot of variety this week — everyone had a completely different take on the sample.

Also, in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, check out this HipHopDx interview of Big K.R.I.T. as he talks about Martin Luther King, Jr.’s influence on music and hip hop.

Quick Updates:
The Promise EP – Sev Seveer is doing great things out in Chicago, providing music therapy for troubled youths through his company, Organic Beat Market.  Here’s an excerpt from the press release of the EP

“Oak Park, IL Janurary 2012 – Chicagoland hip-hop artists Sev Seveer (Troy Brundidge) and Defcee (Adam Levin) have teamed up to release The Promise, a five-song EP by high school-aged rappers A.B. and Baby G. The EP is the result of two months of songwriting and music production workshops led by Levin and Brundidge in Oak Park, IL, and the first in an ongoing collaboration to lead further workshops for troubled and/or under-performing high school youth.”
